The Time Travels Choir and the Writers Club from Bell Trace Senior Living will be performing Saturday, May 24th at the third annual Intergenerational Song, Story & Dance Celebration. The intergenerational performance is the brain child of local singer songwriter Krista Detor. The Time Travels Show is a signature event of the Creative Aging Festival which is held every year in Bloomington to celebrate older Americans month.
In 2012 Ms. Detor contacted Life Enrichment Director, Julie Hill, and offered her services in leading an intergenerational songwriter’s workshop. Out of that experience a song was born, and the Time Travels Choir had their first performance. Krista loved the experience and in 2012 she returned and devoted 6 months of her time to working with the choir.
Under the tutelage of Krista Detor, the choir and the Writers Club wrote the music and the words to an amazing choral piece, “Underneath a Canopy of Stars”, which they performed at the second annual celebration. They were joined by the music students from Edgewood Jr. and Sr. High. “It’s a delightful sight to see the youth and elders share a stage,” said Julie Hill, “their interactions are a treasure.” Of course the song was a big hit in the show, and later the choir had the pleasure of recording their song at Krista’s studio.
For the third annual celebration, the 12 member choir, along with the Writers Club, have joined together and woven a spoken-word piece around the beautiful standard “Sentimental Journey.” “The Writers Club worked on snippets and stories surrounding the idea of travel,” Julie Hill said, “we have taken their words and will be reading them while the choir sings in the background.” “The writings are beautiful, and the choir is better than ever. This is going to be a memorable show.”
The Intergenerational Song, Story & Dance Celebration is being held at the John Waldron Arts Center Saturday May, 24th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Krista Detor will perform along with story teller and humorist Arbutus Cunningham, extraordinary jazz vocalist Janice Jaffe, and more surprise guests.
