Like many seniors, Donald Wilson was initially hesitant to enter senior living and accept assistance. Now, he’s been living at Altenheim for more than six months and feeling right at home.
His son Robert, who visits him daily, praises the sensitivity of the Memory Support staff.
“My dad is an old-fashioned, do-it-himself kind of man, so he sometimes has a hard time asking for help or embracing it,” Robert said. “But the nurses here make him feel comfortable with that. I trust that he’s in good hands when I’m not here, and that’s the best feeling for a family member to have.”
When Robert visits, he feels like part of the CarDon family. Whether he and his father are building a puzzle or sharing one of the community’s delicious meals, he said it’s just like being at home with his dad.
Outside of his time with Robert, Donald enjoys the music therapy classes at Altenheim. Music is scientifically proven to improve memory and overall cognition in seniors. Altenheim’s music therapist encourages residents to sing and dance to favorite tunes from their past.
“They love grooving to Elvis,” Robert said with a gleeful laugh.
Robert credits the Altenheim staff for creating this kind of joy throughout the community.
“The whole staff is wonderful,” he said. “They’re warm and friendly, and I take comfort in knowing they’re taking good care of my dad.”
